Images

Images can be uploaded in any resolution. JPEG, PNG and WebP are preferred file formats.

Images are automatically scaled to the appropriate size depending on where and how they are displayed in kulturbytes. This means that you generally do not need to prepare different versions of an image for different uses.

PNG images with transparency are particularly well suited for logos, as the transparent background allows the logo to be displayed cleanly on different backgrounds.

In addition to the image itself, you can provide information that describes the image and defines how it should be used and attributed:

  • Focus Point – Defines which part of the image should remain visible when the image is cropped or displayed in a different aspect ratio.
  • Alt Text – A short description of the image for accessibility and situations where the image cannot be displayed.
  • Photographer – The person who took the photograph.
  • Copyright – Information about the copyright holder.
  • License – Specifies under which license the image may be used.
  • AI Label – Indicates whether the image was created or significantly modified using artificial intelligence. Providing this information supports transparency and helps meet the EU’s requirements for identifying certain AI-generated or manipulated content under the EU AI Act. The transparency obligations of Article 50 apply from 2 August 2026. See the European Commission’s guidance on AI transparency obligations for further information.
  • Description – Additional information about the image and its context. The description is also used as the caption when the image is displayed on detail pages.

kulturbytes accepts images in any resolution and aspect ratio. For images used to present events and venues, landscape and portrait orientations as well as square images are supported.

As a guideline, images around 1600 × 900 pixels (16:9) are a good choice. Larger images can also be uploaded and will be scaled automatically when displayed.

How images are displayed

Images are displayed in different sizes and aspect ratios depending on where they are used in kulturbytes. The original uploaded image is retained, while the system automatically scales and, where necessary, crops the image to fit the available display area.

Because the same image may be used in different contexts, there is no single display size or aspect ratio that applies everywhere. Images intended for specific display formats or for generating social media posts are an exception and should follow the recommended pixel dimensions and aspect ratios for the respective format.

Tips for choosing images

For images used to present events and venues, a landscape orientation is generally recommended. Images should have a clear and easily recognisable main motif and should not contain too many small details, as these can become difficult to recognise when displayed at a smaller size.

Text and logos should generally be avoided in event and venue images. They can become difficult to read or may be cropped when the image is displayed in different contexts. If text is an integral part of the image, a single word or a very short line of text can be a good compromise.

Avoid placing faces or other important elements close to the edges. Since images may be cropped depending on the display context, keeping important content towards the centre helps ensure that it remains visible in different contexts.
